DOT Collector & BAT Training

How Training Works

Two parts, one clear path: study the knowledge free at your own pace, then earn your qualification live on Zoom — where a qualified evaluator watches you perform the exact mock collections DOT requires. No travel, no classroom, no guesswork.

The mock scenarios you'll perform

DOT doesn't just want you to know the steps — it requires you to demonstrate them, error-free. During your live Zoom session your evaluator walks you through each scenario and documents it in your qualification packet. For urine (§40.33(c)(1)) and oral fluid (§40.35(c)(1)) the regulation names the exact scenarios, and those are reproduced below. For BAT, §40.213(c) sets the number — seven — and leaves the scenarios to the trainer; ours are marked as such.

5 required

DOT Urine Collector

49 CFR §40.33 · five consecutive error-free mocks
  1. Uneventful collection §40.33(c)(1)
  2. A second uneventful collection §40.33(c)(1)
  3. Insufficient quantity of urine §40.33(c)(1) · §40.193
  4. Temperature out of range §40.33(c)(1) · §40.65
  5. Employee refuses to sign the CCF and initial the specimen bottle tamper-evident seal §40.33(c)(1)
7 required

Breath Alcohol Technician

49 CFR §40.213 · seven consecutive error-free mock tests
§40.213(c) requires seven consecutive error-free mock tests using the device(s) you will actually use — it does not prescribe which scenarios. The seven below are TestRight’s training set, chosen to cover the situations a BAT actually meets.
  1. Standard screening test (result under 0.02) §40.241–40.255
  2. A second standard screening test §40.241–40.255
  3. Screening result ≥ 0.02 → confirmation test §40.251
  4. Confirmation test ≥ 0.04 §40.251
  5. Employee refusal to test §40.261
  6. Test cancelled — EBT malfunction §40.267
  7. Insufficient breath — shy lung §40.265
5 per device

DOT Oral Fluid Collector

49 CFR §40.35 · five consecutive error-free mocks for each device you will use
  1. Uneventful collection §40.35(c)(1)
  2. Insufficient specimen quantity §40.35(c)(1)
  3. Employee has something in their mouth that might interfere with the collection §40.35(c)(1)
  4. Employee attempts to tamper with the specimen §40.35(c)(1)
  5. Employee refuses to sign the CCF §40.35(c)(1)
In every one of the five, you must check the device expiration date, show it to the employee, record it on the CCF, and apply the labels so they do not cover the expiration date. Two devices means ten mocks.
Every scenario is documented. Your evaluator records each error-free mock in your qualification packet — dated, signed, and ready to hand an inspector.
